Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec Unveils Stylish, Angular Chair for Mattiazzi
In their work for Mattiazzi, designer Ronan Bouroullec, who hatched Filo with brother Erwan, says their idea for the chair started with the structure, and then the lines were filled in later. It’s a graphic—almost typographical—design, especially when viewed from the side, an angle that emphasizes the repeating lines of fabric cord wrapped around the solid-beech frame. The shape was conceived to reduce wood waste, and it took many iterations to maximize the seat’s strength (the designers were aiming for a certain structural delicacy that proved to be a challenge). The squareness of the form represents a new vocabulary for the duo. But Ronan says he uses Filo every day as his desk chair—a strong endorsement indeed.
