4 Must-See Retail Destinations in China and Japan
In China and Japan, intriguing designs by young talents move the merchandise.
1. X + Living Architectural Design (Shanghai) Co.
Project: Zhongshuge, Chengdu, China
Standout: As if a pebble had dropped in a pond, stepped seating ripples outward beneath the mirrored ceiling at Li Xiang’s sixth bookstore for the Zhongshuge chain.

Project: Herschel Supply Company, Shanghai
Standout: Alex Mok and Briar Hickling gave a Canadian outdoor brand’s pop-up a deconstructed “mountain hut” constructed with interlocking pine beams.

Project: Orec Co., Nagano, Japan
Standout: To show off agricultural equipment to farmers driving by, Masahiro Kinoshita’s pavilion combines lots of glass outside with humble plywood inside.

4. Prism Design Consulting Shanghai Co. and Office Coastline
Project: Runner Camp, Shanghai
Standout: To evoke a track meet, Prism Design’s Katsuki Tomohiro and Office Coastline’s Matsushita Akihito, Wu Zhenyan, and Yang Zhenyu set LEDs into the concrete floor of this sneaker flagship.
