Hilary Matt Puts a Modern Spin on the Country Aesthetic for a Home in Amenia, New York
When tasked with designing a country escape in Amenia, New York, designer Hilary Matt opted for a playful take on traditional aesthetics. “We were highly influenced by the Hudson Valley in this residence and decorated with a modern country feel,” shares Matt of the home, which is located within the Silo Ridge community. For the young family who purchased the house as a means of escaping the hustle and bustle of New York City, Matt prioritized a balance of form and function. The daughter’s room doubles as a guest room, for example, and features a sophisticated palette of subtle neutrals accented by pink pieces that offer flexibility, such as the floral pillows.
“Black and white is definitely a staple of mine, so I think that carries through the space with small pops of color,” she adds. “We wanted to keep things crisp and bright while adding little details of playful colors and patterns.” The foyer, complete with earthly light fixtures, a meditative bench, and modern artwork, hints at the subtle mix of textures and whimsy throughout. In the living room, a pair of striking armchairs seem to melt into the floor, adding personality to the space. “I love the mix of modern and organic in this home,” Matt says. “It feels like an upstate house but not traditional at all, which I think is fresh and interesting.”
