Humboldt Park Health Opens Community-Driven Fitness Center In Chicago
2025 Best of Year Winner for Fitness
Residents of this West Side neighborhood in Chicago, an underserved area with a large Puerto Rican population, suffer from high rates of obesity, diabetes, and depression. So Humboldt Park Health, a local hospital system and the first in the Midwest to earn Healthcare Equity Certification, turned to Chicago firm JGMA, its founder born in Bogotá, Colombia, to fashion the Humboldt Park Health Wellness Center, a 46,840-square-foot facility containing fitness areas, an Olympic-size pool, indoor track, and more in a three-story, architecturally compelling building, its inviting curves formed from iridescent green-blue aluminum-composite panels. Inside, more blue beckons visitors to take the wide spiral staircase, sunny yellow appears in racetrack-motif walkways, and murals by area artists enliven walls, all capped by a rooftop terrace. The center is the first part of HPH’s master plan to put vacant land it owns to good use. Next up: affordable housing.
