Experience The Essence Of Rome In This Sophisticated Hotel

The Rome EDITION, is a boutique hotel conceived by American hotel entrepreneur Ian Schrager, in collaboration with Patricia Urquiola. The hotel, which was originally a 1940’s Italian Rationalist bank building, has been reimagined into a sophisticated urban retreat. The hotel’s transformation into a modern destination was led by visionary hotelier Ian Schrager, alongside architect and designer Patricia Urquiola and the Roman architecture firm 3c+t Capolei Cavalli.

An imposing facade, adorned with climbing jasmine and ivy, brings stature to the global hospitality brand immediately upon arrival, with its imposing facade and grand scale. A bronze pergola leads guests down into a lushly landscaped “piazza”—an open air restaurant populated with fresh white furniture and oversized planters of flowering plants. The space also extends into a lush courtyard garden—one of several outdoor areas designed to feel like green sanctuaries in the middle of the city.

Ian Schrager worked alongside Patricia Urquiola and 3c+t Capolei Cavalli to craft The Rome EDITION, just steps away from the Trevi Fountain.

The original structure—a bold and elegant canvas—set the design language for the team who have elected to embrace its architectural history. From the symmetrical geometry of the façade to the repeated use of travertine, the essence and bones of the building are celebrated and enhanced. Notable original features include a cipollino marble staircase, central courtyards, statues and lamps.

Urquiola’s interior intervention respects the logic and proportion of Rationalism while softening it with rich tactility and organic materials. Her design language introduces warmth where once there was austerity. Throughout the public spaces, carefully considered custom furniture, warm tones curved lines and luxurious textiles as well as those seven meter high green velvet drapes—offset the original building’s formal lines, adding emotional resonance to a space that might otherwise feel imposing. The lobby, with its soaring ceilings and immersive use of travertine walls, is counterbalanced by a palette of soft greens, creams, and deep wood tones. Contemporary Italian furnishings and mid-century pieces create a welcoming space that feels residential rather than institutional.

Rationalism Is Juxtaposed With Rich Tactility In This Hotel

The hotel’s 91 rooms and suites are an ode to minimalist elegance. Here, the scale and feel is intimate and the focus is on material quality and a sense of calm. Light oak wood panelling, linen textiles, subtle lighting and bronze detailing create a palette that is both modern and timeless. The bathrooms are outfitted in rich travertine and brushed brass—a spa-like aesthetic, despite their compact size.

Anima, the hotel’s flagship restaurant, exemplifies the creative flexibility of the hotel’s design. Two bold color stories—Yves Klein Blue and Chartreuse—define the two main dining rooms, infusing them with a distinctive energy. The open kitchen, shielded by amber-tinted glass, encourages transparency and interaction, blurring the boundary between guest and chef. Travertine surfaces, velvet seating, and warm lighting give the restaurant a mood that is both theatrical and intrinsically Roman.

A reinterpretation of EDITION’s classic Punch Room concept, the bar in Rome takes inspiration from English clubs and 19th-century salons. Dark walnut paneling, amaranth velvet seating, and a Rosso Levanto marble fireplace create an enveloping, moody environment. One of The Rome EDITION’s most compelling design features is its rooftop terrace, offering panoramic views of the Eternal City. The design here leans into modern elegance with sleek outdoor furniture, warm lighting, and Mediterranean landscaping.

The result is a property that exudes a subtle grandeur, steeped in local character yet globally modern in spirit, cementing its place in the eternal city’s hospitality scene.
