Lighting Fixtures Inspired by Sailboats Add Intrigue to This Restaurant in Shenzhen, China by DAS Lab
Located along Shenzhen Bay, maritime leisure activities are becoming more popular in Shenzhen, China. For Funk & Kale, a restaurant in a mall in the Nanshan District of the city, designer DAS Lab offers a nod to that activity—especially sailing and the process of supporting, hoisting, and opening the sail of a boat. Such actions inspired the custom lighting fixtures in brushed stainless steel used throughout the space, including an outdoor dining area.
The lighting fixtures mix with clay, wood, and metal for an ambiance of its own. “The restaurant stands out from the setting of the shopping mall and becomes a unique visual highlight,” lead designer Ding Yijun notes. The menu also stands out, providing Western-style health food including roast chicken and whole wheat pasta. DAS Lab considered how to evoke a healthy lifestyle in their design and hoped to create “an emotional space with rigorous geometric order.”
