Architecture Roams Wild At This Eco-Farm In China
2025 Best of Year Winner for Outdoor Space
Stretching across 57 acres, this alfresco venue by Various Associates in Wuhan, China, melds nature education and cultural tourism, with animals being the main attraction. Visitors to LuxeIsland Farm meander along curving pathways that cross wooden bridges and wend through grassland and sandpits as they pass by earth-sheltered buildings—some semiconcealed in the hillside, others fabricated via traditional craftsmanship yet futuristic in bearing. Materials are primarily turf, timber, and sustainable bamboo, the latter woven to form latticed domes that cast light and shadow play below. Many facades are operable, blurring indoors and out while facilitating events such as craft markets, art exhibitions, and evening performances. Deer, goats, and other creatures wander freely, encouraging engagement and adding an experiential layer.
