Miami Beach Apartment by SheltonMindel: 2018 Best of Year Winner for Large Apartment

What could be better than a second home high up in Miami Beach’s oceanfront Faena House by Foster + Partners? Two of them, of course. This 5,500-square-foot retreat, for a family of six with a full-time residence in New York, was combined and conceived by Interior Design Hall of Fame member Lee F. Mindel, the founding principal of SheltonMindel. The sweeping water views afforded by the apartment’s floor-to-ceiling glazing and wraparound terraces inspired his décor scheme. “It conjures the feeling of vacation, of joy and beach balls and umbrellas,” Mindel says.

In the living area, custom curved sofas are shaped to evoke the foamy edges of lapping water when the tide comes in. Wire jellyfish sculptures by Benedetta Mori Ubaldini appear to drift against the curved sunny yellow doors of a hallway storage unit. Slatted wood like that of sun-shielding louvers forms white-lacquered paneling and benches in bedrooms, where primary colors are further explored amid the apartment’s prevailing white. At windows, double-layered linen curtains—white sheers backed by solids—drape luxuriously. Throughout, terrazzo flooring mimics the color and pattern of shifting sand, and circular mirrors resemble portholes on a ship sailing out to sea.
