At One With Nature: Nyra Stuns In The Desert Rock Resort
Best of Year Award Winner for Hotel Dining
Nyra and Mica, Desert Rock Resort, Hanak, Saudi Arabia
Leveraging the resort’s remote, craggy setting, the 40‑seat wood‑fired Nyra by Studio Paolo Ferrari perches high above the valley, the restaurant’s retractable glass doors providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor dining. Volcanic rock—naturally pitted for the irregular paving underfoot and rough‑textured for the faceted wall screens—anchors the theme of “fire’s transformative force.” That idea carries through in gleaming bronze pendant fixtures, floor‑mounted lamps recalling prehistoric torches, and custom furniture crafted from charred wood. A long, torch‑lit corridor leads to Mica bar, where a massive piece of local yellow limestone has been carved into an enveloping sculptural shell and counter for preparing the resort’s signature mocktails (the property is alcohol‑free). The cocoonlike space opens onto an expansive terrace overhung by the rock face and animated by triangular fire pits and a reflecting pool sheathed in hand‑patinated bronze.
