Dim-Sum Details Enliven A Community Hub In Chinatown
2025 Best of Year Winner for Budget
Conceived by the nonprofit Welcome to Chinatown to keep the Downtown New York neighborhood thriving, Small Business Innovation Hub by Spaced Agency hosts business-support services, community events, and coworking in a ground-level, 2,500-square-foot former retail store on the Bowery. Befitting the endeavor’s constraints—both financial and spatial—reconfigurable elements are cheap, cheerful, and germane. Mobile display modules inspired by dim-sum carts allow the space to segue from consulting office to night market or art gallery with ease; at the end of the night, the items stow into a cherrywood built-in. (Budgeting bonus: Because the carts are not permanently affixed, they qualified for grants not usually available for construction projects.) The other main move is a silver acoustic curtain on a sinuous track that selectively reveals and conceals meeting and exhibit areas.
