Steve Leung Designs a Harmonious Model Apartment for One Park Shanghai

Located in the premier neighborhood of Gubi, One Park Shanghai is a residential development steeped in prestige. To create an appropriately high-style model apartment for the complex, the developers tapped Steve Leung Designers, a Hong Kong-based firm with exactly the right sensibility for the job.

Harmony was the mantra, so SLD decided on a subdued scheme that emphasizes symmetrical arrangements. Muted grays appear in a bevy of richly textured materials—metals, leathers, marbles, and fabrics—ensuring those neutral shades, which can appear at in the wrong circumstances, are dimensional and luxurious.

The living room’s plush upholstered seating is arranged in perfect symmetry. Photography by Chen Wei Zhong.

There are two wings, public and private, delineated by different floor materials. The east wing, with gray Portuguese marble underfoot, comprises two kitchens, one Chinese, one Western; separate living and dining rooms, the latter with an adjacent bar; a powder room; and maid’s quarters. The west wing, a sanctum with dark oak flooring throughout, contains four bedrooms, each with en suite bathroom, a family room, and a study.

Carefully considered details abound. Take the cove ceilings: Concealed lighting casts a buttery-beige glow over their glossy surface, not only making them seem higher but also illuminating the room below beautifully. Or the living room’s pleated lampshades, which are echoed by traditional wooden shutters that decorate the walls. Harmonious indeed.
