Marcella Hobbs is the founder of The Flourish Society, a sustainable goods brand that upcycles commercial textile leftovers into bags, pouches, and accessories made in collaboration with artisan women in Belize who live in underprivileged villages. Before starting The Flourish Society, Hobbs spent years working in commercial interior design with a focus on healthcare and couldn’t ignore the amount of waste produced by the interior design industry. That’s where The Flourish Society began. She saw an opportunity to address the industry’s waste problem while creating real opportunity for women. Hobbs built a partnership with Material Bank to redirect their returned textile samples to Belize, where artisans turn those samples into handcrafted, functional products. Waste gets diverted, women gain steady income, independence, access to healthcare, and the products themselves are beautiful. Hobbs’s work sits at the intersection of design, sustainability, and social impact. The Flourish Society is taking the industry’s leftovers and putting them in the hands of women who can give them a second life. Connecting their skills to materials the design industry was already throwing away.
