15 Product Highlights from IMM 2019
Flexible lighting systems, more and more outdoor furniture, and statement color—these are just a few trends Interior Design spotted at the international contemporary furniture fair IMM Cologne, which took place January 14-20 at the Koelnmesse exhibition center. This year the annual fair drew 150,000 visitors from 145 countries, with over 1,200 exhibitors displaying new products and trends for the residential and contract market. From a sculpture that hides your head from the world to snap-into-place semi-transparent shelving, here are 15 of our favorite finds.
1. Pop by Rongjie Yang of X-Work: Done with dealing? This notable entry in IMM’s Pure Talents Contest recognizing rising young stars allows you to bury your head in the sand—no beach required. The acoustical pendant sculpture provides a sound-absorbing retreat for your stressed-out noggin, while a transparent strip allows unobstructed views out.
2. RGB Shelving System by Stefan Diez for Burgbad: Goodbye hair-pulling instruction novels and hello snap-into-place shelving. The color-forward tinted glass and aluminum has innovative assembly that allows just that. Available in assorted colors, the wall-mounted system can be used on tile, wallpaper, or plaster.
3. Baschnja Lamp by Ilja Huber: This year’s first prize winner in the Pure Talents Contest was this battery-powered three-part light, which can be split into three different light sources.
4. Richter Chair by Anton Rahlwes for Objekte Unserer Tage: Uninterrupted color makes this chair look good even when stacked. It’s available in powder-coated steel or lacquered beech.
5. T-able by Sieger Design for Conmoto: With three basic shapes, five heights, six table tops, and various colors and embellishments, 288 different combinations are possible Not enough? The table system is also customizable.
6. Taidgh Series for ClassiCon: Shelf or sculpture? Taidgh O’Neill designed the zig-zagging solid wood Taidgh series to fit both categories. “I am interested in making things look broken and yet stable in that brokenness,” explains O’Neill. Four different variations are available in solid oak or walnut.
7. 927 by Labsdesign for Rolf Benz: Easily grasped and moved with one hand, the wood and steel makes positioning an impromptu side table a breeze. It’s available in two heights, with five color options.
8. Das Haus 2019 by Truly Truly: Why walls when objects and furnishings make for a friendlier divide? That was the philosophy explored by Truly Truly for its experimental home installation for Das Haus 2019.
9. Typography Floor Lamp Designed by Truly Truly for Rakumba: The flexible lighting trend continues with this new floor lamp—featured in Das Haus—which draws from the Typography collection of fittings and features seven different lights that can be mixed and matched around a rail.
10. Ona Cocktail Chair by Sebastian Herkner for Freifrau Sitzmöbelmanufaktur: Comfort and curves combine with a jolt of visible craftsmanship in this upholstered cocktail chair. The leather piping is stitched by hand.
11. Mya Series by LaCubitera for Mega Mobiliario: Patchwork blocks of color combined with oak veneer add a Nordic feel to this collection of living room furniture and sideboards.
12. Ribes Modular Seating System by Antonio Citterio for B & B Italia: Advances in outdoor furniture design mean durability and style come hand-in-hand. Case in point, this new modular seating system. Painted frames are in shades of anthracite, sage, and clay, while versatile upholstery options include wide or narrow stripes.
13. Drop Chair by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen: Just in time for Spring, the classic plastic Drop Chair now comes in pastel shades of gray, pink, yellow, and blue.
14. Floyd-Hi Bed by Piero Lissoni for Living Divani: In a similar vein as the Floyd-Hi sofa, this bed adds easy elegance—here, with subtle leg detailing and large cushions on a lowered headboard.
15. Mona Occasional Table by Grandiablasco‘s Diabla Brand: Bubble-gum pink is one of the more striking color options available for the lacquered-steel occasional table—suitable for outdoors—by Diabla’s in-house design team.
