Appellation Healdsburg: A Culinary Destination By Design

California’s Sonoma Valley, an area marked by lush landscapes and storied vineyards, is an enticing destination for foodies and oenophiles alike but few hotels capture its spirit like Appellation Healdsburg. The lauded hotel—named the number one resort in both California and the continental United States in this year’s Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards—does not merely treat Sonoma’s culinary culture as an amenity; rather, it’s the foundation of the hotel’s design.

From panoramic views of nearby vineyards to an on-site chef’s garden, Appellation Healdsburg—designed by EDG Designs and led by Appellation co-founders, renowned chef Charlie Palmer and longtime Four Seasons veteran, Christopher Hunsberger—infuses the rituals of cooking and tasting delectable dishes (and drinks) into every aspect of the guest experience. Here, culinary culture guides visitors from the moment they step inside. Imagine sampling a carefully prepared amuse-bouche plucked from a butcher-block table along with a pour of local wine—the perfect pairing to review the provided map highlighting nearby wineries and culinary destinations. And that’s just the beginning.

Throughout the property, flexible Maker Rooms with dedicated work counters and sliding glass doors serve as test-kitchens of sorts for food-focused experiences. Think: demonstrations by local artisans as well as cooking classes, tasting, and private dinners. And for larger events, a barn-like space called The Grange opens to the outdoors, connecting the street to the hotel’s expansive chef’s garden. Anchored by an exhibition kitchen, which centers the chef, The Grange serves as the heart of Appellation Healdsburg, reinforcing the region’s seasonal rhythms by inviting nature in.

Appellation Healdsburg Hints At What’s Next

Appellation Healdsburg, which opened in September 2025, is the founding, flagship resort of Appellation—a hospitality brand committed to creating luxurious spaces deeply rooted in food, community, and place—and speaks to what’s next for the brand, especially considering its early-onset recognition.

“To win a WBA category in your first year of opening is, frankly, almost unheard of. I’m so happy for you all! It’s well-deserved. Between you and me, it’s the hotels with the very best service that top the categories—because that’s what really drives people to vote,” Maya Kachroo-Levine, Editor, Travel + Leisure, said in a statement.

The hotel’s attentiveness is evident in the guest rooms, as well. There, custom pantries are outfitted with refrigerated drawers and include dedicated plateware and silverware, inviting guests to indulge in their own culinary explorations. Rooms also feature pour-over coffee service as well as wine service.

At the pool, a custom Airstream known as Water Shed offers a more relaxed interpretation of the hotel’s culinary identity, serving street tacos in a playful nod to casual California dining. Together, these elements create a hospitality experience where food is not simply served—it shapes how guests arrive, gather, and experience Sonoma.
