Deborah Berke Wins Berkeley-Rupp Prize for Women in Architecture
Deborah Berke, founder of New York-based
Deborah Berke Partners
and adjunct professor of Architectural Design at
Yale University
, has always sought balance in her work, juggling form and location as well as form and function. For her dedication to that end – including her involvement with
designNYC
, the
Forum for Urban Design
‘s Board of Directors, and the
Design Trust for Public Space
– UC Berkeley’s Center for Environmental Design (CED) awarded her the first biannual
Berkeley-Rupp Prize
for sustainability, community awareness, and the advancement of women in design and architecture.
“It is important for students to understand what it takes to make a building for work and for making things,” says the
Interior Design
Hall of Fame member of her accompanying CED professorship, “because it is in those spaces especially that the presence of architecture must be in balance with the forces of life.” Berke’s own life will have plenty to balance soon as she prepares for a CED lecture and retrospective of her work opening January 28.
