Delve into Danish Design with a Relaunched Classic

In 1955, Poul Kjærholm melded his love for the sleek and steely forms of Modernism with the warm sinuousness of woven baskets. The PK1 Dining Chair was the result – an homage to the Danish designer’s fascination with wicker and a testament to his mastery of materials and techniques.

After Carl Hansen & Søn added Kjærholm to their portfolio in 2016, the brand re-released this iconic chair in a steel and flag halyard combination. Now, true to the designer’s original vision, the Poul Kjærholm collection will feature an updated version of the PK1 chair, this time with a steel frame and wicker seat and back.

“Poul Kjærholm’s furniture–including the wicker PK1 chair–fits perfectly into the Carl Hansen & Søn collection,” says Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of the Danish furniture manufacturer. “The PK1 epitomizes simplicity in every detail. It is sculptural in appearance and, by virtue of its wicker back and seat, is very comfortable to sit in.”

Like Kjærholm’s own dedication to resisting fads and designing with place in mind, the PK1 chair’s simplicity lends it an elegance that makes it a natural centerpiece in any sector. Ideal for both residential and commercial sectors, the PK1 is a classic study in the language of materials and letting the form of a piece bolster the materials’ appeal. Carl Hansen & Søn’s interpretation of the PK1 has been slightly altered to account for today’s slightly taller and larger population and has been outfitted to work equally well in indoor and outdoor settings.

“We are very proud to be manufacturing Poul Kjærholm’s very first dining chair,” continues Hansen. “The talented furniture designer’s uncompromising approach to design, materials, and workmanship is completely in line with our craftsmanship values. This, combined with Poul Kjærholm’s unique skill at combining function and aesthetics in a subtle and elegant way, makes him a natural fit for the Carl Hansen & Son family of designers.
