Hans Wegner Sketches Inform Carl Hansen & Søn’s CH23 Reissue

The Hans J. Wegner-designed CH23 was an original chair for Carl Hansen & Søn.

Hans J. Wegner’s long and fruitful association with Carl Hansen & Søn began in 1950 with the CH23, one of four original chairs for the furniture maker. Determined to push the potential of wood, the Dane delivered a design that was striking, but eminently functional. “There was a completely new and exciting expression to his work, but also a simplicity,” CEO Knud Erik Hansen says. Out of production for five decades, the chair returns in a reissue guided by Wegner’s own sketches, the only change being a slight rise in height. The straightforwardness still belies a bevy of details: the cruciform cover caps that mark the junction between the form-pressed back and frame, the gentle arch of the rear legs, the double-woven seat. Choose from oak or walnut, or a combination of species, and cord in natural or black.
