Jordi Ribaudí’s Versatile Leather Chair for Toru

For centuries, the Barcelonan municipality of Igualada has been famous for producing leather—it even boasts a leather museum. So you can argue that, when industrial designer Jordi Ribaudí established Toru in a former tannery there, his specialty was preordained. Vegetable-tanned hides are treated with extracts of chestnut, mimosa, and quebracho, finished with wax, and then fabricated into furnishings such as Babu. “It’s a nomadic chair,” he says. “You can lounge on it indoors or out.” Two leather sheets are adhered together and folded to form the back, while barely visible brass feet keep the seat upright. Accented with a velvet-covered cushion, the leather comes in black, brown, hazelnut, and natural.
