Beijing’s Fountain Plaza Welcomes A Futuristic Book Pavilion
Over a few weeks in April, a silvery, biomorphic form materialized in Fountain Plaza, a bustling commercial and cultural zone in Beijing. Clad in panels of aerospace-grade aluminum, the 460-square-foot Shell Book Pavilion is for collective reading, its built-in and freestanding shelving—made from sustainably harvested wood lined with volumes for both children and adults—revealed when its set of titanium jaws open vertically via internal hinged bearings, taking its interior height from 8 feet to nearly 14. It’s the work of local firm Luo Architects, whose portfolio includes previous projects designed to celebrate the written word, including a movable children’s lending library shaped like a ladybug. “I’ve long been fascinated by things in nature,” chief architect Yujie Luo says, “particularly drawn to these structural aspects that arise from the logic of growth.” Plus, since the installation is positioned at the center of the plaza, with pedestrian flows from all directions, it couldn’t be a conventional box with a defined back side. Every side needed to be engaging, visible, and accessible.
That dynamism gives the pavilion multiple functional possibilities, from a private reading room when closed to a small stage for talks and performances when open. It was conceived, Luo says, “not as a fixed, static presence, but as a space meant to shift and evolve,” noting that he was also thinking about gullwing car doors when he formulated the hinged mechanism. That fluidity of use reflects his firm’s larger mission to add not just new buildings to the world but also new kinds of experiences, likening this pavilion to immersive urban public artworks like Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Architecture, as this fantastical yet humble mini library shows, remains a vital tool for bringing us together—even around an activity as personal as reading a book.
