Product and Student Winners Honored in Part II of the Sixth Annual NYCxDESIGN Awards
On the heels of yesterday’s ceremony honoring Project winners, Interior Design‘s sixth annual NYCxDESIGN Awards for Product and Student Design winners took place today in a virtual format. For the event, editor in chief Cindy Allen resumed her role as host, but before turning her attention to winners and honorees, she acknowledged event sponsors: ICFF + Wanted Design, Haworth, and TURF as well as this year’s jurors who evaluated 553 submissions across all five boroughs.
Products ranged from Industrial Design winner TreCe from Scandinavian Spaces for Popsicle, a waste bin that looks like the classic cool treat, to Contract Tables winner Bernhardt Design for the Mix Table Collection, designed by 22-year-old British designers Claudia Surrage and Christian Cowper. For Health + Wellness, Dauphin took home the award for its room-in-room system Bosse Ion Cloud, which as Allen says, “effectively eliminates viruses and bacteria, which is exactly what we need right now,” followed by Keilhauer, which won the Greater Good Environmental Impact award for its carbon-neutral office chair, Swurve.
Throughout the nearly hour-long ceremony, Allen touched on a vast range of product categories from Lighting to Contract Flooring to Kitchen and Bath, as well as Jewelry Design, a category in partnership with New York City Jewelry Week, awarded to Cat Merrick Jewelry for Strange Days. “This was her poetic attempt to create order out of the anonymous days of quarantine,” shares Allen, adding that each pigment-filled bead represents a day isolated and contained in glass. And Flos earned the People’s Choice award for its light sculpture Coordinates.
Last but certainly not least, Allen announced the Student Design winners in partnership with Williams-Sonoma, Inc. Business to Business. “This group of amazing minds was so thoughtful in solving problems for such a wide range of issues,” she asserts. Winners ranged from Zilan Chen (Pratt Institute), who earned two awards, including one for Mixo-Suit Home Rehabilitation System, a lower body exoskeleton rehab system for children with cerebral palsy that acts as a remote therapist, to Regena Reyes (School of Visual Arts) for Isla Airflow Manipulation Device, used to prevent airflow from a sick room, to Cynthia Ke Sun, Ellen ZhengYi Ren, and Alexis Dentino (all Pratt Institute) for Plantoval, which rethinks high school bathrooms by replacing mirrors with plants to shift conversations on body image, to name a few. With that, the sixth annual NYCxDESIGN Awards came to a close, celebrating achievements across the city’s design industry in a year like none other.
