Rebelo de Andrade’s Iridescent Spheres Reimagine Vineyard Living In Portugal

Although they’re named after molecular components, this trio of iridescent spheres may bring to mind bubbles, particularly because they appear to float effervescently above the grounds of a private vineyard. Átomos, or atoms, in Setúbal, Portugal, “was born from the desire to transform the way we inhabit and feel a place—an object of art conceived to awaken the senses, simultaneously symbolic and sustainable,” say Luis and Tiago Rebelo de Andrade, the father and son cofounders of Lisbon architecture studio Rebelo de Andrade of the inhabitable volumes, which stand more than 10 feet aboveground via stilts, all interconnected via wooden walkways. In a nod to global circularity, the golden exteriors are dotted with locally sourced, repurposed glass bottles, affixed in an abstract representation of the world map. The interiors, each approximately 170 square feet, are for introspection, relaxation, and creative output—with ample inspiration coming from views through porthole windows to the lush and fertile grape-growing grounds.
