Rei Kawakubo’s Fashion Influence Explored at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

She began in advertising but soon switched to fashion design, opening her first store in 1973 in Tokyo. See more of her history in “Rei Kawakubo/Commes des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art through September 4. Only the Costume Institute’s second exhibition on a living designer, it features more than 150 garments from the last 40 years, 1997’s Body Meets Dress-Dress Meets Body and the more recent Blue Witch and 18th Century Punk among them.
