Peter Valcarcel and Mark Nelson Designs Collaborate on Art-Inspired Wool and Silk Rugs
For his new rug line, New York–based artist, designer, and ceramicist Peter Valcarcel collaborated with Mark Nelson Designs, a company with a long history in the floor covering business. (Its eponymous founder worked for his family’s rug company and several others before striking out on his own.) Valcarcel himself grew up in Peru, where he developed what he calls a “humanistic approach” to shape and color. He uses his own artwork as a starting point, approaching rugs as a painting canvas—and as art you can walk on. His palette is earthy and rich, the motifs at once organic and geometric. In gems like Layers and Embraces, shapes intertwine, overlap, just barely touch, or roam free. All rugs are executed in wool and silk and fully customizable.
