These Scented Wallcoverings Slowly Release Woodsy Aromas

Scented walls seem like something out of a dream, but they were a reality at last year’s Salone di Mobile, when the Milan-based Fantini Mosaici collaborated with Arianna Bavuso and Andre Chedid of AB+AC architects on an installation with a unique olfactory component. Named Martian Veil (a reference to the red planet’s hues), the reimagined terrazzo curtain wall was infused with essential oils, slowly releasing aromas of wood, incense, and eucalyptus into the air. At the same time, inlays of Rosso Verona, Verde Ming, and other marbles celebrated the material’s Italian craftsmanship. The scents brought a pleasing new dimension to Venetian terrazzo’s potential—casting it as a more evolved and high-end material. Lisbon-based Bavuso and Chedid envision several real-world applications, including monumental walls at a mountain hotel or monolithic fireplaces in a villa set in nature. The installation aptly demonstrated the fully custom capabilities of the family-owned artisan surface brand, which teams with designers to realize their every dream for clients. fantinimosaici.com
