Studio Lugo Debuts New Furnishing Collection
The Istanbul-based company, Studio Lugo, founded by Doruk Kubilay debuted a new collection at Alcova during Milan Design Week. Resonance marks a departure from Studio Lugo’s typical polished precision, celebrating experimentation and imperfection as well as the culture of craftsmanship localized to the city’s Grand Bazaar. Kubilay stacked sheets of brass and alpaca metal, aka German silver, like sheaves of paper, shaping them with thermal processes. “While welding, the sheets naturally deform, resulting in a softly wrinkled texture,” he says. The pieces highlight the unpredictable reactions that bond the layers, with dense brass welds left visible as a sort of artisanal stitching. The series includes a desk, chair, shelving unit, pendant fixture, side table, candelabra, and more, plus Checkers, an armchair in burlwood veneer and horsehair—the only piece to depart from the silvery materiality. studiolugo.com
