A Serene, Gothic-Inspired Family Home In Hong Kong
2025 Best of Year Winner for City House
The hushed, ecclesiastical atmosphere suffusing this 4,000-square-foot, six-level family home in Hong Kong by NC Design & Architecture reflects the owners’ religious beliefs. Gothic architectural elements are smoothed and abstracted into contemporary forms, yielding spaces for spiritual reflection, such as the serene, chapel-inspired entry foyer. Beyond it, the double-height living room is framed by a trio of softly molded arches, their arcaded form inverted to create a cloister on the mezzanine above. What appears to be gently billowing drapery emerging organically from the adjacent wall enfolds the fireplace; above it, an egg-shape mound in the ceiling serves as an edge-lit fixture and a symbol of renewal. In contrast to the mostly white interiors, the kitchen is a cavelike sanctuary clad in dark-gray marble from the Greek island of Tinos—another echo of the biblical world.
