Inside Hope Plaza, A Cancer Care Facility Shaped By Nature’s Flow
2025 Best of Year Winner for Large Healthcare
The renowned cancer center City of Hope is in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in Duarte, California, which receives the water runoff from the slopes above. Hope Plaza, its new 350,000-square-foot outpatient facility by EwingCole and CO Architects, takes inspiration from this natural flow, conceiving the eight-story structure as a boulder in an urban river wash. Asymmetrical massing, chevron-shape metal panels, and curved interior volumes allude to erosion patterns and sculpted rocks, while the ground floor welcomes visitors with a glass plane symbolizing water. A palette of stone and wood in warm desert tones is calming; artful pastel graphics are uplifting. Furthermore, centralizing programs previously spread across four buildings minimizes walking distances and stress; infusion bays for IV treatments line upper floors, offering mountain views of the mountains; and natural light throughout maintains circadian rhythms.
