Kettal Helps Rebuild Richard Neutra’s VDL House into a Modern-Day Penthouse
After a 1963 fire devastated Richard Neutra’s VDL Research House, the renowned architect and his son Dion rebuilt their Los Angeles residence, adding a rooftop solarium. Now Kettal, under the supervision of the younger Neutra, has recreated the addition in VDL Penthouse, a 500-square-foot enclosed structure, and VDL Pavilion, an open version without glass walls. The horizontally oriented replicas are inspired by traditional Japanese architecture, with structural columns set back 4 inches to give emphasis to the cantilevering roof, which appears to float over the shell. But while the concept is vintage, the deployment is futuristic, as the penthouse is equipped with the latest smart-home technology—there’s even a small weather station in the chimney.
