Patrick Tighe Elevates The ADU To A Glass-Wrapped Urban Retreat
2025 Best of Year Winner for ADU
It’s called an ADU, but who wouldn’t opt to make this dynamic 1,200-square-foot structure their primary dwelling? Interior Design Hall of Fame member Patrick Tighe conceived it with the sensitivity and flair for which he’s known. The Los Angeles unit, which sits at the end of a 1/3-acre lot bisected by a stream, is accessed from the main residence only via footbridge; as such, it feels secluded and serene. Steel-framed, full-height glass walls open entirely to a terrace, shaded by a sweeping cantilevered roof that’s cedar-clad on its underside and pierced with an oculus. Inside, the program is all of a piece: an open-plan living/kitchen/dining area plus a bedroom, spa, and bath. Outside, native grasses and the seductive pool make the dwelling appear far removed from its mid-city locale.
