Organic Forms Shape This California Desert Escape
2025 Best of Year Winner for Small Country House
Part womb, part chapel, this 1,700-square-foot two-bedroom desert rental retreat by Anastasiya Dudik in Pioneertown, California, was inspired by sacred geometry and sculptural minimalism. The organic shell’s dome shape, conceived to slow the nervous system and immerse guests in stillness, was fabricated of sprayed-in-place concrete over an inflatable form. Porthole windows frame the expansive sky, and daylight flows in through curved cutouts and a run of sliding glass. Interiors derive from 1970’s utopian architecture and wabi-sabi restraint, featuring elemental hand-troweled plaster walls, cement flooring, and natural-fiber textiles. Many furnishings are built-in, including a circular conversation pit that faces out over the horizon.
