2020 NYCxDESIGN Awards Submissions Open Today
Submissions open today for the 2020 NYCxDESIGN Awards. The annual design competition, celebrating its fifth year, honors the best projects and products in New York City at an awards gala during NYCxDESIGN (May 12-20), now operated by Interior Design‘s parent company SANDOW and set to feature more than 400 events taking place across all five boroughs.
“The NYCxDESIGN Awards is celebrating its fabulous fifth year by honoring all that is exceptional about this city: the talent, the energy, and the humanity,” said Interior Design Editor in Chief, Cindy Allen. “Our community continues to produce brilliant design, bettering our lives, in the best city in the world.”
Created by Interior Design and ICFF, the NYCxDESIGN Awards honor outstanding products exhibited each May during New York City’s annual celebration of design as well as New York-based projects that debuted over the past year. Product submissions are open to products shown at NYCxDESIGN-affiliated events and to products shown in New York City-based showrooms, design centers, studios, or temporary installations. Project submissions are open to projects completed in any of NYC’s five boroughs between April 2019 and April 2020.
Submissions open on February 3rd and close on April 3rd. Finalists will be named on May 8th. Winners will be announced at an awards celebration and party during NYCxDESIGN.
Student product design submissions are open to products launched or exhibited by graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in accredited design programs—last year’s winners hailed from schools that included ArtCenter College of Design, Auburn University, Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, School of Visual Arts, University of Iowa, and University of Oregon. The deadline for student submissions is May 11th.
For 2020, several new award categories have been added, including jewelry design, industrial design, and building facades. In addition, there will be a LIVExDESIGN category that celebrates the exhibitions, installations, pop-ups, and trade show booths that are live during the 2020 NYCxDESIGN festival. Intended to spotlight the most creative and innovative activations that capture the public’s imagination, LIVExDESIGN will be subject to a public voting period (May 12-17, 2020) and the results will be reviewed by an Interior Design editorial panel. The winner and honorees will be announced live at the NYCxDESIGN Awards ceremony.
Also planned for 2020: A new physical award designed in partnership with NYCEDC by MakerSpace NYC, an organization encouraging entrepreneurship, advanced manufacturing, and product development. Additional details will be announced in the coming weeks.
“NYCxDESIGN is once again pleased to be partnering with Interior Design and ICFF as they prepare for the fifth annual NYCxDESIGN Awards,” said NYCxDESIGN Executive Director, Edward Hogikyan. “The Awards have become a much-anticipated part of NYCxDESIGN each May and a great way to celebrate the incredible design talent taking part in NYCxDESIGN.”
