Sarah Sherman Samuel Finds Inspiration in Childhood Memories

Michigan landscapes and childhood memories of flying kites and building forts in the woods sparked the Grand Rapids–based designer’s fall collection. The pieces—shot here against the wood-paneled backdrop of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Shirakaba House in West Michigan—have weight and presence while inviting a closer look at small details. “That balance between monumentality and intimacy is at the heart of the collection,” Sarah Sherman Samuel states. Perhaps the most direct references to nostalgic musings are the Kite chair and the Fort cabinet, abstracting elements of their namesakes. The Bivvy lounge chair derives from a bivouac, a temporary camp shelter, its substantial form softened by upholstery that nods to tent ties and fastenings. The Pier side table and Pisces ottoman, meanwhile, are embellished with handmade ceramic eyes or tears. “Those details bring the hand into otherwise elemental forms,” she adds, “and create something only discovered after spending time with a piece.” sarahshermansamuel.com
