Studio Tashtego Hosts Exhibit Showcasing Woodwork By New York Makers
“Woodworkers of the Hudson Valley,” a superlative exhibition on view at Studio Tashtego gallery in Cold Spring through December 7, explores the malleable medium through the lens of upstate New York makers. Alongside chairs, lamps, and vessels from the likes of Jonah Meyer, Kentaro Takashina, and Nadia Yaron is a series by Zach Hadlock: Hypothetical Example, small objects made on the lathe without a defined plan. The Platform founder determines the form as he goes, crafting pieces that take the shape of spinning tops, donuts, or balusters in species like bleached spalted maple and rosewood. “I don’t set out to make a spool or a lemon; I set out with curiosity,” he says. “The process is a type of play that is intuitive, impulsive, and indulgent—like free-association drawings or taking a walk with nowhere to go and finding a new place.”
