2014 BOY Winner: Midsize Corporate Office

Being among the world’s most successful private real-estate companies didn’t stop this one from wanting to shake things up at a satellite office. “It was about pushing different ways of working,” Interior Design Hall of Fame member Collin Burry says. With a build-out reflecting a vision for the next 20 years, he therefore took cues not just from the client but also the site, a 1970’s tower by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

In a nutshell, he did what his firm does best: employing pure building materials to yield a clean, architectural aesthetic throughout the 23,000 square feet. The reception desk is a mass of limestone and steel, while alongside marches a row of white-lacquered partitions, set on a diagonal with respect to the fins crossing the ceiling. Echoing the linearity are the wire bases on the Warren Platner armchairs. “Stylish but timeless,” Burry calls them.

The same could be said of the employee café’s gray-on-gray vinyl mural of the local skyline.
