Artist Liz Collins Teams up with Sunbrella Contract, Pollack, and Ligne Roset for “Dynamic Expansion” Exhibition
Textile artist Liz Collins has a flair for the decadent. Her latest maximalist exhibition, “Dynamic Expansion,” comprises a lounge where art and furniture—literally cut from the same cloth—come together in a surrealist way. Collins collaborated with Sunbrella Contract, a leading performance fabric manufacturer, for the textiles, working together with boutique textile company Pollack on the designs. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with furniture producer Ligne Roset Contract, with their New York City flagship store hosting the installation through November.
Seven canvases made from the capsule collection of eclectic, graphic, high-performance Sunbrella Contract fabrics are suspended above five Ligne Roset sofas upholstered with it. Created from luxe fibers, the classic shapes and bold patterns come together to create an idiosyncratic yet unconventional art and design experience. Waterfalls of colorful yarn stream from the artworks, encouraging visitors to consider the perspectives Collins has created, while a geometric accent wall emphasizes movement in a seemingly static scene.
The dry mélange and plush acrylic yarns used by Sunbrella Contract create a softness that, when juxtaposed with Collins’s sharp geometric designs, emphasize textural interest. Upholstering the Prado sofa designed by Christian Werner, the textiles form intriguing lines and angles, inviting contemplation of the relationship between comfort and physical space.
The renowned durability of Sunbrella Contract’s fade-resistant and bleach-cleanable fabrics ensures none of the luster is lost for designers, artists, and others visiting the exhibition. As Collins says, “From the textile designs and the upholstered shapes to the immersive experience overall, everything is interconnected and in dialogue.”
