Brick Latticework Invites Sea Breezes At This Beach Hotel In Mexico
2025 Best of Year Winner for Boutique Hotel
At the south end of the surf-friendly Zicatela Beach, the intimate Hotel Humano designed by Jorge Hernández de la Garza and Plantea Estudio stands out for its concrete grid structure, perforated by brick latticework that pull Pacific Ocean breezes and dappled sunlight into the double-height lobby, hallways, and coffee shop. Nature appears throughout the 38,000 square feet, from the thatch-roofed restaurant to the 39 guest rooms, each with a terrace. Materials are presented honestly, matched by the simple geometry of custom furniture by Javier Gómez and Juan Naranjo and vintage lighting by Àngel Jové, Miguel Milá, Isamu Noguchi, and Charlotte Perriand. Within a largely neutral color palette, wine-hued ceramic tiles pop, cladding bathing areas, guest rooms, and plunge pools; wainscoting the lobby; and wrapping the bistro bar. The five-story hotel in Brisas de Zicatela, Mexico, has a courtyard layout, but with sunset views of the waves from the rooftop bar, la playa never feels far away.
