Inside Will Meyer’s Modernist Home In Oaxaca
2025 Best of Year Winner for Beach House
The 3-acre property in Oaxaca, Mexico, on the Pacific Coast had been in his wife’s family for decades. When it came time to build a retreat on it for his own family, Will Meyer, cofounder of Meyer Davis and, with Gray Davis, Interior Design Hall of Fame members, sought for it to reflect the rugged landscape and local traditions. He looked to Mexican modernism, for instance, to inform the low-slung profile of the six-bedroom structure, and the traditional palapa, or thatched roof, to cap the living-room portion of the house. Custom clay breeze-blocks in a lattice pattern allow natural cross ventilation—important in the tropical climate—while casting a shadow play of geometric pattern on the otherwise unadorned walls. Meyer’s spouse, Kerstin, who heads Maya Sund, which makes items for women by women, searched out pottery and textiles from area artisans with whom she has forged relationships over many years.
