The Wild Midwest: Standard Style Boutique by Hufft Projects

Take a gander at Standard Style in Leawood, Kansas. Yes, right outside Kansas City you’ll find edgy frocks by Marc Jacobs, Rag & Bone, and 3.1 Phillip Lim inhabiting an equally head-turning 4,400-square-foot boutique built out by the architecture firm Hufft Projects.

Matthew Hufft profited from the 50-foot ceiling by designing a curving canopy that stretches all the way downward to about 8 feet from the floor. “Resembling a flowing scarf,” he says, the canopy is made of something far more substantial, drywall suspended from aircraft cable. Down at floor level, display fixtures and the cash-wrap desk combine clear satin-finished walnut and powder-coated steel. The floor itself is a strong plane of gray ceramic tile.
