All fees, dollar value of products and square footage installed are in million

Whether you’re a subscriber to traditional medicine, alternative treatments, preventive wellness, or crisis management, health care is crucial. It’s also a field in which design continues to play a major role in terms of development and innovation for hospitals, outpatient facilities, and offices. Still, for the 40 top Interior Design Giants working in health care, design fees from the sector dropped 22 percent from figures reported during our last survey: Health care now accounts for an average 45 percent of fees, or a total of $358 million. However, the upside is the ever improving quality of green-lighted projects. The average furnishings, fixtures, and construction value of the 107 million square feet surveyed tallies at about $173 million. The private sector accounted for 67 percent of the total 3,100 projects, with 28 percent handled by public agencies and 5 percent by nonprofits. New construction, at 60 percent of projects, increased slightly from the previous year’s 57 percent. Another increase, to 58 percent, was in the number of projects following LEED guidelines. On the horizon, international work is expected to hail from Asia, the Middle East, and Canada. Promising segments include senior care, skilled nursing, and outpatient facilities.
