Fashion and Interiors: Atelier Oï for Louis Vuitton

“The process was quite long, but very interesting,” says Patrick Reymond, co-founder of Atelier Oï, of his architecture and design firm’s recent collaboration with fashion house Louis Vuitton.

It was nearly four years from their first meeting to the presentation of a hammock and a stool (both leather, both collapsible) at Art Basel, where Louis Vuitton unveiled the 16-piece collection Objets Nomades, spanning architect and interior designer-created travel accessories. Reymond says his firm’s contribution, including a stool that doubles as a bag, was “inspired by Louis Vuitton’s techniques, to see how they build a case, the rigid parts of the leather, to find a structure in that.”

The 11 firms enlisted by Louis Vuitton also include the likes of Patricia Urquiola and Christian Liaigre. Not to mention, Louis Vuitton has called upon an international pantheon of architects to design its stores, including Jun Aoki, Christian de Portzamparc and Peter Marino.

“You must learn from the philosophy of the brand,” says Reymond, whose firm has designed retail spaces for Van Cleefs & Arpels and Swatch, perfume bottles for Bulgari, and light fixtures for many clients. “Then you can go from bathroom bottle to building to furniture.” They make it sound so easy.
