Interior Design’s Cindy Allen Hosts Virtual Chats with Designers
Mark your calendars, grab your phone, and tune in to Interior Design‘s Instagram (@interiordesignmag) weekday afternoons at 2 p.m. EST as Editor in Chief Cindy Allen chats with designers around the globe. Earlier today, Allen caught up with Hall of Famer Roger Thomas, who joined the conversation virtually from his home in Venice, Italy. “We really want to stay connected during these difficult times,” said Allen as she kicked off the first of several daily live streams to come.
During the 30 minute conversation, Thomas—who is currently focused on product design through The Roger Thomas Collection after retiring from Wynn Design and Development—shared insights into how he stays creative indoors and life under lockdown in Venice. While he has yet to see dolphins in the city’s storied canals, he admitted the water does appear clearer and brighter. “It’s magical and haunting,” the doyen of Las Vegas hospitality design said of Venice’s eerily quiet streets and plazas.
Yet, Venetians continue to persevere—leaving the house only for necessary errands, such as trips to the pharmacy, grocery store, or for medical attention, all while maintaining a safe distance. “Everyone waits outside of shops in line six feet apart,” he said, noting the community’s respectful approach to the new normal.
“There is great optimism here among this great difficulty.”
Thomas, who now turns to photographs for inspiration rather than strolls outdoors, graciously shared some recent drawings with viewers during the live stream, offering a look at his soon-to-come scenic wallcovering collection. “This is a time to get creative,” he said as Allen urged him to share another sketch. “We designers are the best creative problem solvers on the planet, I believe. “
Check out Interior Design’s Instagram tomorrow at 2 p.m. EST as Allen speaks with French designer Patrick Jouin.
