Interior Design’s NYCxDESIGN Awards Celebrate Talent Beyond the Boroughs

Interior Design hosted the year’s premiere event celebrating the creativity of New York City on May 20: the NYCxDesign Awards. Editor-in-Chief Cindy Allen led the ceremony, attended by over 400 architects and designers who packed the stadium steps at Penn 1 in Manhattan to full capacity. She was introduced by the NYCxDesign Festival’s executive director, Ilene Shaw, who noted the record number of submissions for this year’s awards—over 600.

After careful review by a jury of design industry titans: Harry Allen, Alexandra Barker, Dr. Carol Bentel, James Corner, Alda Ly, Gregg Pasquarelli, and Becca Roderick, the pool was narrowed down to a shortlist of honorees. Though not all the finalists could be winners, Shaw assured those in the crowd that “if you are here, you are excellent.”

This year represented a new chapter for the program, which expanded its borders for the first time beyond the five boroughs to include the entirety of New York state, plus New Jersey and Connecticut. It’s a testament to the fact that New York’s design community is not only strong but expanding, with a wealth of talent to be found outside city limits. Some winners from the new geographic area included Concrete and HLW International’s SciTech Scity Edge Works in Jersey City, New Jersey, which won in the On the Boards category, and a home in the Hudson Valley by Lang Architecture, who took the prize for Weekend House Transformation.

Per tradition, Lladró, the creator of this year’s NYCxDESIGN Awards trophy, provided the Guest statues that each winner took home. The brand also made a large-scale version of The Guest, which stood over six feet tall, looming over the ceremony from the stage and providing many a photo op at the post-awards celebration.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Allen promised a “special surprise” courtesy of sponsor Maison&Objet, and she delivered by giving away an all-expenses paid trip to Paris to visit the company’s showroom. The winner was Timothy Godbold, founder of the eponymous Southampton-based interior design and architecture studio. It’s a reminder to always show up… you never know what the night may have in store.
