Roche Bobois Celebrates 60th Anniversary with Bombom Furniture Collection

Sofas and Tutti Frutti rugs from the Bombom collection.

In 2019, while perusing Roche Bobois’
Lisbon showroom for a lamp, Portuguese sculptor Joana Vasconcelos discovered the Mah Jong sofa, conceived by Hans Hopfer in 1971. Coincidentally, she was born that same year, which she saw as a serendipitous sign, and a collaboration with the manufacturer soon flourished. Vasconcelos has now reinterpreted half a dozen Roche Bobois pieces, including Mah Jong. This fall, in celebration of the company’s 60th anniversary, she launches Bombom, a furniture collection with a certain joie de vivre. Sofas in fluid shapes come in fresh, tart shades outlined
by black stripes like licorice allsorts. Stretch cotton-blend upholstery covers the mobile backrests and the tri-density foam cushioning (on a solid beech base). Four rug designs complete the collection, including Tutti Frutti, a tufted-wool composition of colorful squiggly shapes contrasted with black.
