Some Assembly Required: A DIY Exhibit Opens in Zurich

Flat-packed furniture doesn’t necessarily mean IKEA. There’s a whole world of designers with the same vision. And Zurich’s Museum für Gestaltung–Schaudepot has just engaged in its own assembly process by building on a 2013 exhibition at Vienna’s Österreichisches Museum für Angewandte Kunst/Gegenwartskunst, better known as the MAK, to present the larger “Do It Yourself Design,” running through May 31. In addition to presenting chairs by Gerrit Rietveld, Susi and Ueli Berger, and Norman Cherner and pendant fixtures by Interior Design Hall of Fame member Ingo Maurer, the show explores the onset of the alternative DIY culture in the late 1960’s, sustainability, and the recent rediscovery of handcraft.
