The Iconic Wegner Wishbone Chair Reimagined for its 70th Birthday
It’s not everyday that one man’s name gets immortalized in tandem with his legendary design. Hans J. Wegner’s namesake Wishbone Chair is turning 70 and Carl Hansen & Søn—known for catapulting his designs to international acclaim—is celebrating. The Danish furniture manufacturer enlisted London-based designer Ilse Crawford of Studioilse to reimagine the chair. Her bold choice of a glossy navy blue finish is a nod to Wegner’s love of Chinese culture. “The blue refers to the color which has been so much a part of Chinese culture: from the blue and white china that obsessed the world for so many centuries, to the dark blue of indigo textiles,” Crawford said, referencing her inspiration. Staying true to Wegner’s original design, Crawford kept the neutral and natural woven paper cord seat, creating a dynamic contrast to the lacquered blue for a classic yet contemporary statement. This true collector’s item is only available until April 30.
