From Spazio Vivo To Ola: Snaidero At 80

Eighty years of trade is nothing to shrug at: The Italian Ministry of Enterprise even issued a special postage stamp this year to applaud Snaidero’s watershed anniversary, depicting stylized renditions of its iconic headquarters and sinuous Ola kitchen. The company traces its origins to 1946, when Rino Snaidero founded a workshop in the northeastern Italian city of Majano. In 1968, the manufacturer debuted one of the world’s first truly modular kitchens, Spazio Vivo by Virgilio Forchiassin, which eventually earned a place in the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. A decade later, architect Angelo Mangiarotti completed a second milestone: the comp-any’s futuristic Majano HQ, punctuated by rows of porthole windows. Another product standout, Ola, Snaidero’s first collaboration with legendary automotive design house Pininfarina, debuted in 1990, its mica lacquering and fluid island with swooping carbon-fiber support leg marking yet another bold step forward for the Italian company. It’s still a favorite today. snaidero.com
